Chemical Storage Buildings

The high quality components and detailed specification permit location of a chemical storage building in the most exposed position or, if preferred within a larger building.

In the latter instance they can provide a high security storage unit for almost any product. Careful choice of materials used in construction means the building requires a minimum of on-going maintenance.

Specification

Walls
Interlocking precast concrete panels with an applied 'Whitespar' applied aggregate finish externally. Manufactured to CP116 with a steel reinforcement to BS4449, the panel edges are profiled to accept a P.V.C feature strip. Connecting bolts and other fittings are rust resistant.

Roof
A choice of either:

Concrete Roof
Precast concrete units manufactured to CP116, pitched to fall and bolted together with rust resistant fixings. Finished with two layers of hot bonded felt, the top layer being mineral surfaced. A brown 'plastisol' coated steel fascia trims all four sides at eaves level.

  Fibre Cement Roof Profiled
Natural coloured, fibre cement sheeting manufactured to BS690, laid to fall and supplied complete with all necessary fixings. A brown 'plastisol' coated steel fascia trims all four sides at eaves level.

Rainwater Guttering
Black vinyl half round guttering with down pipes and all necessary fittings.
  Chemical Store.

Warning Signs
A stove enamelled aluminium warning sign is supplied to suit the classification of substance(s) being stored.

Doors
A choice of single or double doors in timber. All doors are flush exterior quality, with 1 hour fire resistance to BS476, hung in a softwood frame complete with intumescent strips. All doors are outward opening, supplied painted red gloss and seated on 150mm high pre-cast concrete cill. Doors are fitted with 5 lever mortise deadlock. The clear opening size of single doors is approximately 784mm wide x 1.725m high. Double doors are approximately 1.384m wide x 1.725m high.

Site Preparation
A smooth and level concrete base must be provided by the customer, to the requirements of the local Authority, with dimensions 600mm wider and 600mm longer than the internal dimensions of the building.

Services
PLANS: Elevation drawings, suitable for submission to the Local Authority, your Fire Officer and Factory Inspector, are available on confirmation of specification.

Construction
These chemical storage buildings are constructed nationwide using trained teams.

If assistance is required in deciding the specification, we will be pleased to arrange for a Technical Representative to call by appointment.

DESIGNED AND TESTED TO MEET THE LATEST SAFETY REGULATIONS

These chemical storage buildings are designed to satisfy the requirements and recommendations of 1) The Petroleum (Consolidation) Act 1928 and 2) The Highly Flammable Liquids and Liquefied Petroleum Gases Regulation 1972 (S.I.917).

Chemical Store.   The differing requirements of the above regulations are more than adequately catered for by these buildings and can broadly divide into two categories: 1) Storage for Petroleum Mixtures where the specification is normally a pre-cast concrete roof, and 2) Highly Flammable Liquids (H.F.L.) and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (L.P.G.) stores which generally require a fibre cement roof.

By offering a modular design with a choice of wall construction, roof design and unit size they can be rapidly constructed, at a known cost, with very little on-site disruption.

NOTE: The storage of Petroleum Spirits and Mixtures is controlled by licence and the type of store provided for any material is subject to the consent and approval of the relevant Licensing Authority.

Where a chemical storage building is to be used as a high security store and the materials to be stored are non-toxic you may, subject perhaps to the recommendations of your Insurance Company, specify whichever type of store you feel would best suit your purpose.

Roof Construction

  • Pre-cast Concrete - generally for external storage of petroleum spirits and mixtures and internal storage of H.F.L.
  • Fibre Cement - generally for external storage of H.F.L., L.P.G. and other substances.

    CODE:
    A - 2 hour fire resistance insulated
         pre-cast concrete
    B - 1 hour fire resistance insulated
         pre-cast concrete.
    C - ½ hour fire resistance pre-cast
         concrete.
    D - Non-combustible fibre cement sheets
          to B.S.690

    Wall Construction
A choice of three wall specifications is available to satisfy the period of fire resistance required, depending on the type of material stored, the location of the store and other factors.

    CODE:
    1 - 2 hour fire resistance insulated double pre-cast concrete .
    2 - 1 hour fire resistance double pre-cast concrete.
    3 - ½ hour fire resistance single pre-cast concrete.

    Vents
The walls are provided with 230mm x 230mm cast-in galvanised vents to provide permanent ventilation at high and low level. Copper wire gauze flame arrestors fitted to the internal wall vents can be provided as an optional extra.

    Fire Test Results
Tested in accordance with BS476 (Part 8)

    a) Yarsley Testing Laboratories Ashtead Test No. C. 64240/1 Date: August 1977
    b) Fire Research Station Boreham Wood Test No. FROSI NO.4513 Date: November 1967

Roof Construction
Span: 2.400m
Height: 2.000m
Lengths: from 1.200m to 7.200m in 600mm increments. Multiple length units are available with partition walls.

Particular requirements for the storage of Liquefied Petroleum Gases (LGP)
Having regard to the advice give in the 'Code of Practice for the keeping of Liquefied Petroleum Gas in cylinders and similar containers' published by the Health and Safety Executive, we supply chemical storage buildings for L.P.G. storage with the following modifications to the standard specification.

WALLS:

The H.S.E. Code of Practice recommends that walls of a purpose-built LPG store have a standard fire resistance of not less than 120 minutes.

DOORS:

Standard timber 1 hour fire resisting doors (single or double) over a 150mm high standard cill. Single doors have a clear opening size of 0.784m wide x 1.725m high (0.9m x 2.0m overall the frame) with Double doors 1.384m wide x 1.725m high (1.5m x 2.0m overall the frame).

VENTILATION:

The standard cast in vents are replaced by concrete louvres at both high and low level with a permanently ventilated area amounting to 2½% of the combined area of the walls and roof.

Standard Specification includes one of the following:
Outward opening door, gloss painted red.

CODE:
W - Timber, double, 1 hour fire resisting
Z - Timber, single, 1 hour fire resisting

150mm high liquid retention cill beneath door.

Warning sign.

CODE:
50 - PETROLEUM SPIRIT, HIGHLY FLAMMABLE, NO SMOKING OR NAKED LIGHTS
51 - PETROLEUM MIXTURE, HIGHLY FLAMMABLE, NO SMOKING OR NAKED LIGHTS
52 - HIGHLY FLAMMABLE, NO SMOKING OR NAKED LIGHTS
53 - L.P.G. HIGHLY FLAMMABLE
55 - NO SMOKING OR NAKED LIGHTS
56 - ACID
58 - AUTHORISED PERSONS ONLY
Clause 2:1:4(b) of the H.S.E. Code recommends that a further total area of not less than 7½% of the combined total area of the walls and roof should be of light construction to allow for explosion relief. This requirement is met by roofing with fibre cement sheeting.

It should be recognised that every storage condition for LPG must be considered on its merits and that special circumstances, may necessitate variations from the general requirements of the Code of Practice, but for most situations the following recommended specifications will apply:

Corrugated fibre cement roof - Type 'D'

  • 2 Hour fire resistance insulated pre-cast concrete double wall - Type '1'
  • 1 hour fire resisting timber door - Type 'Z' (single), or type 'W' (double)
  • Warning sign - Type '53'
